Preserving an American Masterpiece

Good news/bad news....
We have successfully completed the repair to the belfry. Much thanks and many accolades to Menders, Torrey & Spencer for stewarding this project and Murray Brothers Construction for the amazing care and skill they used to bring the belfry back and get our beloved bell ringing out across the town again.
That's the good news....

We had anticipated receiving a $50,000 grant so that we could finish the the entire cupola.  Unfortunately due to lack of funding at the State level we did not receive the grant.  This means that in order to complete the work and bring the dome of the cupola, the weathervane, the clock and more back to a good state we need to raise $145,000 by October.  So if you haven't already donated to this wonderful cause please do so  or if you already have tell a friend, your neighbor, a family member.

This project is made even more critical because when working on the belfry we discovered that the dome has a leak below the weathervane and the water dripping actually carved out the timber to the point where  if you saw it you would think you were looking at a dug out canoe.  To delay the project means the drip drip drip will continue to erode the cupola.

The Bulfinch Fund is a secular, independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to preserving Lancaster’s Fifth Meeting House. The Bulfinch Church is a National Historic Landmark and is considered to be the most pristine example of Bulfinch’s architectural genius still in existence.

Lancaster’s storied Fifth Meeting House has been in use since 1816. Visitors to the First Church come to appreciate how Bulfinch shaped our landscape and why he remains a national leader in architecture, studied by scholars and students around the world.

Our organization of neighbors, friends and businesses is working to restore this landmark building and ensure that this local icon
will continue to be a vibrant gathering place for community, educational and cultural activities for generations to come.
